Overview
• Releases this summer for computers & game consoles
• Includes playable copies of Karateka & Deathbounce
Karateka, the first game from Jordan Mechner published for the Apple II in 1984, will be the subject of Digital Eclipse’s first release in the Gold Master Series, a line of interactive documentaries.
The interactive documentary will include not only original interviews and design documents, but also playable assets, according to the official press release:
- Pixel-perfect versions of the original Karateka games, plus a variety of never-before-seen early prototypes, with rich quality-of-life features like save anywhere, rewind, chapter select, and director’s commentary.
- Two remastered games: Karateka Remastered, an all-new adaptation of the original featuring cutting-room-floor content, commentary & achievements; and Deathbounce: Rebounded, a fast and frantic twin-stick shooter based on Jordan’s unpublished prototype.
The complete digital package will be available simultaneously on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC (Steam, GOG, and Epic Store) by the end of September 2023, with a physical edition from Limited Run Games following later.
In the meantime, Digital Eclipse editorial director Chris Kohler is scheduled to speak at KansasFest 2023 online on Saturday, July 29, at 12 PM CDT (UTC-5).
Unlike our other works, The Making of Karateka is the story of one single game, using video features, Jordan's original design documents, the contents of his floppy disks, and so much more to go deeper into the making of a single game than ever before!
