Apple-1 Registry gets an overhaul

With all the recent news about Apple-1 computers fetching the 21st century equivalent of a king’s ransom seemingly every few months, and more and more units emerging from storage units, garages and attics, Mike Willegal decided it was time to give his Apple-1 Registry a facelift.  The new layout features a clickable table of units in an easier-to-read format and now includes recently-discovered machines updated information, with more improvements coming.

Check it out here.

Come to KansasFest, assemble your own Replica 1

According to the latest posting on the KansasFest web site, Vince Briel has volunteered to host an interactive workshop on assembling a Replica 1 kit. The Replica 1 is a functional clone of the original Apple-1 designed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. For only the cost of the kit ($149 USD), attendees will have the opportunity to build their own Replica 1 under Briel’s expert supervision.

Reconstructing Apple-1 BASIC

Michael Steil has produced what he calls “the first confirmed perfect dump of the 4096 bytes” that constituted the BASIC that shipped with the original Apple-1 computer. This software was recovered after Steil received a copy — in MP3 format. From his blog:

The Apple I is extremely rare. Only 200 were built, and less than 100 are believed to be in existence … The cassettes are even rarer, as not every Apple I came with one. There has not been a dump of the tape until 2002, when Achim Breidenbach of Boinx Software got an MP3 recording of an original Apple 1 BASIC tape … [and] managed to decode it by writing a program — in GFA BASIC on an Atari ST.

Hat tips to TUAW and 9 to 5 Mac.
