In an interview posted on Kotaku today, Jordan Mechner detailed his intentions to reboot Karateka, the popular Apple II title originally published by Br0derbund. Â Mechner explains his interest in revisiting the game:
“It’s been eight years since my last game, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time in 2003… I was really itching to get back to my indie roots and make something with a smaller team, and Karateka just seemed perfect for that.Unlike Prince of Persia, it’s remained untouched for nearly 30 years. It’s never been remade and there hasn’t been a sequel. And yet people still remember it so fondly. I’ve gotten hundreds of messages from fans on my website and twitter asking about a new Karateka. It was my first game, the one that started it all for me, and I felt it really deserved to be revisited.”

Jimmy Maher, whose excellent blog posts over at the Digital Antiquarian should be required reading for any aspiring computer historian, is trying to put together a Robot War competition. Â He writes:
“I’ve recently had occasion to write a bit about Silas Warner, Muse Software, and Robot War (http://www.filfre.net/tag/muse). The latter is a bit outside of my usual fare, but just so interesting and historically significant that I couldn’t resist. Â As the most recent article in that series attests, I would love to hold a Robot War tournament of the sort that Computer Gaming World sponsored back in the day, only (thanks to modern technology) better and more interactive. See the post in question for my complete vision of how such a tournament could work.”
Jimmy is looking for more entrants into the competition before he can move forward, so if you’re looking for something retro-computing to do, head on over to his site and sign up. Â It sounds like it could be a lot of fun.
