Joe Strosnider has announced the immediate availability of the A2 VidGA expansion card, which adds VGA video output to the Apple II, IIe & II Plus. Although not as modern a standard as HDMI, VGA is still broadly used by external monitors and projectors. The card design is based on an open-source model published by Vince Briel in 2023, which itself is based on Mark Aiken’s model.
The base model available from Joe’s Computer Museum costs US$34.99 and comes with the VGA port directly on the card; for an extra $6, the port is detached from the card and connected via a ribbon cable, allowing it to be easily threaded through the computer’s rear panel. The card comes preloaded with firmware for either the IIe or the II and II Plus, though the firmware can be swapped using any Windows computer by following these instructions.
At the time of publication, 25 units of the A2 VidGA card are in stock. UPDATE (28 Jan 2024): The A2 VidGA card is now out of stock.
In addition to developing hardware, Strosnider also has a YouTube channel and a Patreon, and he has presented at KansasFest and written for Juiced.GS. Where he finds time for it all remains a mystery.
