Stefan Wessels has released an original Apple IIGS version of Time Pilot, the 1982 arcade shoot-em-up from Konami.
In Time Pilot, players assume the role of a fighter pilot who flies through different time eras to rescue other pilots. The player’s plane can fly infinitely in any of eight directions as it shoots down enemy planes and evades their return fire.
The original coin-op Time Pilot was the fifth highest-grossing arcade video game of 1982, with home versions released for the Atari 2600, ColecoVision, and MSX. Wessels’ port is the first time the game has appeared on the Apple II.
Wessels is an accomplished developer of Apple II ports of games, including Attack of the PETSCII Robots, Penetrator, and Gomoku. His Apple IIGS version of Time Pilot was built in Orca/M, available in The Byte Works’ Opus ][ collection from Juiced.GS.
Time Pilot for the IIGS supports both keyboard and joystick input. It does not have audio, but we’re hopeful an enterprising artist will volunteer to contribute to this project; the source code is available in GitHub.
UPDATE (July 20, 2024): v1.3 of Time Pilot added audio, courtesy Brutal Deluxe. As of the time of this update, the latest version is v1.5.a.
