From 1986 to 1995, Sierra On-Line published six games in the Space Quest series, the first two of which were released for the Apple IIGS. The point-and-click games, which followed the interstellar adventures of janitor and comic relief hero Roger Wilco, were largely designed and written by Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, aka “Two Guys from Andromeda“.

After a decades-long hiatus, the Two Guys from Andromeda announced a spiritual successor to Space Quest when they launched a Kickstarter in May 2012. Although the crowdfunding campaign successfully raised US$539,767, the promised game, dubbed SpaceVenture, entered into “development hell”, with the estimated delivery date of February 2013 being missed by over a decade. SpaceVenture was finally released to the public on April 1, 2025, for Windows via Steam Early Access for $14.99.

Reviews based on the Early Access version were extremely negative:

SpaceVenture is so very, very bad. It’s bad from the opening seconds, from the moment you realize how incomplete it is, how poor it looks, how clunkily it’s been made… know that everything looks bad, like 20 years ago bad.

The full version, released December 23, 2025 on Steam and itch.io, has “Very Positive” reviews, presumably from hardcore fans:

SpaceVenture is a hilarious throwback that captures the charm of classic point-and-click games. Sure, it’s a bit janky at times, but the humor and nostalgia make it worth it!

EU Games Review

… it does capture the flair of the original Space Quest games. Many references to Roger Wilco and other Sci-Fi related topics, it did keep its own space quest special humor and is a nice nostalgia trip… If you loved Space Quest, give this SpaceVenture a try.

Those interested in trying the game for themselves can find it on Steam. The 43-track soundtrack can be purchased separately for $14.99.
