Jeremy Rand’s BuGS was one of the breakout Apple IIGS games of 2021, with fast-paced arcade action in the style of Atari’s Centipede. The game’s development was assisted by the many helpful members of the Apple2Infinitum community on Slack.

Now, three years later, Jeremy has gone back through both the Slack archives and his own GitHub code repository to create a chronology of the game’s evolution, starting with the first public mention of the game in August 2020 through the initial release in February 2021. Videos of the game at each stage of development, as well as a link to a snapshot of the source code as it existed at that point in time, let other programmers follow along as BuGS took shape.

For more insight into BuGS, check out Jeremy’s KansasFest 2021 talk, “Inside BuGS Graphics Code“.
