System.II, an 8-bit desktop-style system manager for the Apple //c, enhanced //e, or IIGS, has been released to freeware status by Eric Bush, the copyright holder. It’s available for download here on A2Central.com.
When using System.II, files and disk drives are represented by icons and can be chosen with just a keypress. Some utilities are included with the system, including:
- Copy file
- Copy disk
- Rename
- Unlock
- Delete
- Format
- Shut down
The system includes a built-in screen saver, and is highly configurable, with options for menu style, system clock speed (for accelerated systems), and the selection of keyboard, joystick, or mouse as the primary input device. You can also select a boot slot, security options, and which files automatically run at startup or shutdown.
The released version of System.II is the Developer’s version, so it icnludes the tools necessary for programmers to create new utilities that run in the System.II environment (which runs on the Microdot kernel).
The software unpacks onto multiple 5.25″ disks or a single 800KB disk, or onto any ProDOS hard drive.
Originaly published by Kitchen Sink Software, the freeware release was arranged by the Lost Classics Project.
