New Game Plus — a weekly audio podcast where three guys spend seven days playing one old game, and then they talk about it — have announced that the next randomly selected game they’ll be reviewing is Number Munchers, MECC’s 1986 edutainment title for the Apple II.

Podcast episode #428 will debut next Monday, May 20, 2024 at 0400 UTC — but as a teaser, show co-host Kenny recorded an unscripted “first play” video where he makes an initial attempt at performing basic arithmetic (albeit using the game’s 1990 DOS version).

Fans of Number Munchers are invited to play the game (available on the Internet Archive) along with the rest of the NGP community in Discord.

Number Munchers may be the first Apple II game to be featured on New Game Plus since I appeared as a guest to review Lode Runner way back on episode #35 in May 2016:

CORRECTION: Here is the full list of Apple II games featured on New Game Plus.

Lode Runner is the only Apple II game to be “New Game Plus-certified”, in which two or more of the hosts deem it worth playing today.

The hosts of New Game Plus also lent their Apple II retrogaming insights to Juiced.GS Volume 21, Issue 4 (December 2016) when they reviewed the original Castle Wolfenstein.

(Full disclosure: I back NGP on Patreon.)

UPDATE: The Number Munchers episode has now aired, with a plug for A2Central.com (via Discord) at 40:32.
