Limited Run Games, in collaboration with Clear River Games, is now taking preorders for The Making of Karateka, the Digital Eclipse interactive documentary that was released in 2023 and which has previously been available for download only.

The game will release on March 31, 2025, for Sony PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch for US$34.99 each plus shipping. Also available for $69.99 is a deluxe edition, with packaging inspired by the original Apple II 5.25″ floppy drive. Included in the box are a soundtrack CD, an enamel pin featuring the Karateka protagonist, an 18″ x 24″ poster, and a new, illustrated edition of Jordan Mechner‘s developer journal. Twenty copies of the limited run will also include a floppy disk featuring Deathbounce, Mechner’s Asteroids-inspired action game for the Apple II.

Also available from Limited Run Games are physical editions of Llamasoft, featuring the games of renowned developer Jeff Minter (of Tempest fame); and Tetris Forever, which includes the Apple IIGS version of Alexey Pajitnov’s famous puzzle game. Each game comes in both standard and deluxe editions — for example, Llamasoft’s deluxe edition comes in a box designed to look like a stack of 3.5″ floppy disks, while Tetris Forever comes in a tetromino-shaped box.
The standard editions of Karateka, Tetris Forever, and Llamasoft can be purchased as a bundle for $104.97; or get the deluxe bundle with all the feelies and swag for $297.97.
Upon its initial release, The Making of Karateka graced the cover of the September 2023 issue of Juiced.GS, in which reviewer Chris Torrence wrote: “Digital Eclipse has created a masterpiece that is both entertaining and tells a compelling story. The game will satisfy both the armchair game historian and the fan of retro games.”
