Jordan Mechner is hosting an online competition to see who can complete The Prince of Persia the fastest, with both an autographed copy of the English language edition of Mechner’s graphic novel memoir, Replay, and a Steam key for the Windows version of The Making of Karateka as prizes.

The rules: “Capture a video of your Prince of Persia Challenge gameplay from beginning to end. You must complete the game and rescue the princess.” Since Prince of Persia has a timer that continuously counts down, the goal is to finish the game with as much time left as possible. (Glitches are not permitted.) The top twenty fastest speedrunners win!

Entrants are instructed to use the MS-DOS version, not the Apple II original, unfortunately — but skill with one should transfer to the other. The game can be played online at PrinceJS or in the Internet Archive.

The competition is hosted in collaboration with Twin Galaxies, the official supplier of video game records to Guinness World Records. Submissions are accepted until Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 06:59 UTC.
